Chapter 15 - Lecture 5 – Chemical Properties of Alkanes

Chemical Properties of Alkanes:

Alkanes undergo 2 types of chemical reactions. They are:
  1. Combustion
  2. Substitution
Combustion:

Alkanes react with oxygen in the presence of heat, to form carbon dioxide and water.

This reaction is called Combustion.

Substitution Reaction:

Alkanes react with Halogens under proper conditions, to form compounds in which one or more hydrogen of the alkane is replaced by a halogen radical.
